BTEC First Principles & Application of Science (Level 2)
What is the Course About?
This course is designed to help you build strong scientific knowledge and practical skills across biology, chemistry and physics. As a vocational qualification, BTEC Applied Science focuses on learning through real world applications, hands on activities, and problem-solving tasks that reflect the world of science employment.
Throughout the programme, you’ll develop valuable transferable skills, including:
• Working safely and confidently with scientific equipment
• Collaborating effectively with others
• Carrying out practical investigations
• Producing research and practical reports
This makes the course an excellent foundation for further scientific study or entry level jobs in science related settings.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?
No, you won’t need a DBS.
Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?
No, there is no specific uniform or resources required.
What are the days and hours of the course?
You will attend UCM for a 2 days per week. Additional days may be required if you are also studying English and/or Maths. Timetables are issued during Induction in September.
Will I undertake a work placement as part of the course?
No, there isn’t a work placement required as part of this course. There will be plenty of work-based encounters and opportunities to develop your employability skills

What are my progression and career options?
After completing this qualification, you can progress to:
• Level 3 study at UCM
• Entry level employment in science related areas
This course provides a strong stepping stone for those wanting to continue in the sciences.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through a combination of:
• Internal assessments (coursework assignments)
• External assessments (exams)
This mix gives you the chance to show what you’ve learned in different ways.
Entry requirements
You will need:
Three GCSEs at D or above including English (Literature or Language) and/or Maths.
Please note, Functional Skills Level 1 pass is equivalent to grade D.
If required, you will be able to re-sit your English or Maths GCSE alongside this course.
